Yes, the new version is better. Higher contrast but fine with B&W and quite sharp wide open. You can usually find a really good specimen of the newer lens for just under $500. The older ones are a little hard to find in good shape, especially the LTM ones from the late 50s. I do miss the focusing tab which is not present on the new one though. JB, who has 2 of the newer ones. One chrome and one black.
