Jeffery,
Possibly the best surge protector is a UPS power supply.  Basically a large
to really large lead/acid batter.  Not only do they cushion power outages
but they can also absorb a rather large power spike without transferring to
the equipment.  A couple of years ago I could have sworn we had Bahgdad
Electric as the power would go off several times a day.
