I once bought an expensive item offered at a very attractive buy-it-now
price from a seller with zero feedback, who was also selling a few other
expensive items (Leica APO stuff).

This is ordinarily a sure-fire prescription for getting ripped off but
instead of running away from the seller I wrote and asked a few questions.
He turned out to be a photographer selling his 35mm equipment in favor of a
larger format; he had a legitimate photo website, and the pictures of the
equipment appeared to be his own photos, not pictures taken from Leica's
website.

The transation was great, the item (1.4x APO extender) arrived quickly and
in perfect condition.

So... be suspicious, ask questions, don't be in a hurry, and the deals are
there if you do some research.
