Ken,
The Elmar is the earlier design so less sharp, more flare.  On at least my
example, the Summaron is very much like a Summicron IV but with less
contrast.  Good sharpness and great boke just not as snappy.

Horses for courses so choose which look you like.  For better quality the
Summaron in 2.8 version is extrememly good but more money.
