Also, you have to take into acount how the meter reads.  Surely by now we
would all understand that YMMV, one persons perfect exposure is another
persons blown out dreck.  An example would be the opening picture of that
other subway essay posted early today.  The light on the hands holding the
verticle bar with the background going to black is either a masterful
printing job of very good reflexes catching the light just as it
transitions.  Another person may have exposed for the crowd and not seen the
hands.

So, in a hypothetical sense, the essay is correct.  Down in the real world,
the photographer has always had to determine just what was wanted in the
image and where the whites and blacks fell.  Strictly the photographers
choice, unless of course the camera is always on automatic so the camera
chooses.
