Nowadays it is easy to make a high-reliability backup.

Buy a USB or FireWire external drive, copy your files to it, turn it off,
unplug it, and put it in a safe place. Once a year you should turn it on for
a few minutes, and once every 5 to 7 years you should copy its contents to a
new drive.

I am a believer in the archival properties of Mitsui's Phthalocyanine/Gold
CDs and DVDs, such as those marketed by Kodak, and I fully expect that the
archives and safety copies I have made on these discs will last long after I
am dead, but as long as I am alive I am also making active backup copies on
external hard drives that are turned off most of the time.
