Brian,

To a photographer's eye, that is one of the best photos I have seen.  Still, 
it is not very flattering of the mother.  Since she holds the purse strings, 
your beautiful work was not enough to make her see it as a whole, rather 
than just looking at her own image.  Some people only want contrived images, 
which are difficult with two children, and are not as good as your 
spontaneous catch.
