Philippe,
Most of America does not have anything like the common square, pubs, or any
other place that is not work for people to gather in groups.  Instead, we
have Starbucks and sports bars where people can rub elbow or what have you.
But, being Americans, we are not quite able to actually associate with each
other so we bring laptops and ipods to distance ourselves from the group.
But the electricity is free hence all the wires charging the batteries.
