Witness the tripod mount on the R8 and R9.  Sort of like they figured 
there might be some heavy, herky lenses - including those that include 
a rotating lens mount due to center of balance (i.e. 280 f4, 70-180 
f2.8 etc.).

I gotta believe that Leica calculated the shear weight of all the 
present and proposed lenses for the M8 and designed the mount 
accordingly.

If they didn't - their bad!

Hand held, isn't that what using an M and fast lenses are all about?

That does look very painful, I'd not be too happy about the bottom 
breaking off any of my cameras!
