I don't know if it is worse or better than Asia -where most of us have never been either) but I'd take these measures when backpacking and going to places where differences between rich and poor are huge, too. Luckily in Europe, untill now, we've managed to keep these differences within limits. Although things are changing rapidly, lately. Must be since politics started to talk business instead of politics... But about Barcelona (and the rest of Europe), I don't think you'll need chicken wire in your bag.
