I don't know if it makes any difference on a digital Nikon (I use Canons), 
but
the earliest 55mm Micro-Nikkor (with the knurled metal, non-rubberized focus
ring) has a compensating diaphragm made for using a separate meter.  At any
aperture other than f/3.5, the diaphragm opens up to compensate for image
magnification factor as the lens is focused closer.  I still use one of this
type with an adapter on our 1D for copy work, since it's so sharp and has no
distortion.
