as someone who's been photographing concerts for long time -- i can tell you 
my secrets are:

1) 1600 asa
2) white balance to "tungsten"
3) ev -1
4) spot metering

one of the biggest exposure problems is that you have very inconsistent 
light, brightly lit subject, black background, or the opposite.  this 
configuration has proved the most accurate through several years of trial 
and error.
