I look at exposure alterations in post processing more as if making a  
light or darker print then having any effect on the virtual negative.  
As far as the virtual RAW negative is concerned - if the highlights  
are blown they're blown there's no retrieving them in post  
processing. And on the other end - when you've reached the threshold  
of introducing noise into the shadows - whatever post process fixes  
you may apply - the shadow will remain messy.

Similarly, what ever you can do to achieve proper WB in your lighting  
will make life easier in post. If you've got cross-over happening -  
you've got color problems - even though the post process software  
allows you to tweak to your heart's content.

Digital is super wonderful for what one can fix in post processing.  
RAW is amazing compared to other capture formats. But using the best  
craftsmanship before pushing the button still gives the finest end -  
just as with film.
