Simone,

Sure.  Some fairly decent barbecue rib joints in the USA use wood 
pellets in their smokers.  Ya gotta be
careful that the pellets don't have a binder in them that would screw up 
the taste of the meat.

BTW, Aga no longer makes their cookers to use any solid fuel.
