Richard,

You can group images in LR in a number of ways. Tina uses metadata so  
she can search. I group the images into Collections. These are not  
folders, just a feature of the LR database. So, all my images from  
Berlin are in the (surprise) Berlin collection, etc. My pictures from  
Alicante are assigned to one big collection called Alicante Life, but  
within it there are sub-collections, like Semana Santa 2008 etc. The  
assignment is done by simply dragging images to the collection in the  
Library module. All this is independent of the physical location of  
the files.
