Hi Richard,

All my RAW files reside in one big directory on an external HD. When I
import them into LR, I use the "copy to DNG" option. This converts the
RAW file to DNG and stores the DNG in a directory on my HD that I have
specified. Just one big folder. The RAW files are never touched again,
they are there just for backup. The DNG folder is not organized in any
way. All the organization takes place using this Collections feature
of LR. This is good enough for me. If your needs are different, you
can (like Tina) assign keywords and various other pieces of metadata
on which you can search later if needed.
