Most drives will last a long time if you do not drop them.

However, best to buy a couple and use them BOTH as backups... USB drives are
really cheap right now.....   Lately, I saw some Maxtors for $150 for 1.5TB

I use WD drives ( used to be an employee).... No problems.

Which means absolutely nothing..... you could get some duds.....
