I bow to anyone who actually knows better, but I'm not aware of
significant support differences between AMD and Intel-based machines.

I used to be a Red Hat user for years and years, but after they chose to
get entirely out of the non-corporate market, I had to look elsewhere.
I've been through several generations of Ubuntu (on small servers, and
on a wee Eee), and while my fingers still find Debian-style package
management and a few other config issues unfamiliar, every time I've
recently revisited the question of whose Linux packaging to install,
Ubuntu has come back out on top. I just installed 64-bit Ubuntu 9.04 on
a little server, and am pleased to report that 64-bit Linux seems to be
mainstream and no particular trouble now.
