Thanks Tim and Marty and Geoff for the responses. I will definitely try them 
out on some of my scanned negatives. Shame to have them all say "Nikon 
Coolscan..." or "Polaroid Ultra 45" when recording the actual tool is 
important to me.

exiftool will do anything you want it too, but you should probably be 
comfortable with the command line...
