The D700 is a great camera; perhaps more than an interim solution,
especially at over $2K. (When I think "interim" I think P&S costing less
than $200). 

If you just want to get by until another camera comes out, I'd stick
with the D200. It's a great camera, too. If you're not making prints
bigger than 8x10 or you're posting images on the web I don't see any
great practical advantage to the D700 over the D200.  

The D700 has the advantage of full frame and less noise at high ISO (by
a good margin). If you need those features then by all means, get a
D700. Call me old fashioned but the thing I like most about the D700 is
that it makes the 50/2 Summicron a normal lens and the 28/2.8 Elmarit an
actual wide angle. 

I bought a D700 with the thought that it's the last camera I'm gong to
buy for a long time. I could be wrong but I really don't see anything
with appreciably better overall performance that doesn't cost and arm
and a leg coming onto the market any time soon.
