Very nice explanation.... thanks....

The easy answer to which is which is the round ( II) or the rectangular
(III) VF window.....
The other reasonably easy to spot difference is the stop down on the II.

Thanks again.....

the difference is that the III's 90 degree prism when mounted has much
more clearance over the top of the camera. The II's prism drops down in
the back as can vaguely be seen:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:VisoII-600.jpg
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:VisoII-IIIf-600.jpg
(this is my viso II i put on wikipedia)

whereas the III's prism is flat at the bottom (look at the 3rd picture):

Hence, the II's 90 degree sits virtually flush against the top of the
slimmer "classic" profiles (M2, M3, M4, M6 classic, MP) . The II's
prism won't fit the taller M6TTL, M7, M8, or M9. You need the Viso III
to get that headroom.

Also, the II has a nice round adjustable eyepeice, the III has a crumby
"modern" rectangular eyepeice that can take add-on diopters.

You win some, you lose some.
