This will become akin to choosing a lens, aperture and shutter speed.
What is appropriate for conditions and intent?

Some will make the correct choices.
Others will not.

There's a hell of a lot of hard copy out there
which should never even have been put in digital form.

And yes.
When an image deserves to be seen as a print
only a print will do.
