Subject: [Leica] Funny thing happened on Hawaiian Airlines......

We were waiting for an inter Island flight..... The gate personnel went
around looking at and moving hand luggage before the flight to see if anyone
had violated the weight or size limitations. The 2 ladies around the corner
had a set of luggage that would never have made the size limitations for
carry on, nor probably the weight limitations. They were really incensed
when they were told they must put their luggage in the hold, and pay the $10
per bag fee for checked luggage....

The guy sitting next to me had a small backpack. The personnel hefted his
bag and told him to go to the scale and get it weighed. As you might guess,
he had a bunch of camera equipment in there.... and had indeed violated the
20 pound limit. He was told to check the bag or reduce its weight..... (
can you imagine checking a bag full of camera stuff in an unpadded bag?) So
the guy takes out the Canon ( put in model number here, a big D-SLR with a
long and heavy white lens) and puts it around his neck. Re-weighs the bag
and passes. All is well, he made the cut. The camera was considered some
form of "personal item".

He goes back to his seat, looks around, and puts the camera back into the
bag........and boards the flight.

messages.....
1) It's all about the revenue
2) Use your head when dealing with the Airlines..... they have rules....
which you must obey..... to the letter, and no further.
3) M cameras and lenses weigh less, are smaller, and appear to be in tiny
camera cases that could not be heavy.

My tiny Domke bag, complete with M body + 3 lenses + Leica Binoculars + my
wife's P+S + 5 M8 batteries + lunch ..... was never questioned.
