M cameras are smaller, but they don't necessarily weigh less than other bodies. The lenses are lighter than some pro level huge zooms. On Delta last month they were mostly interested in my 50 odd rolls of film rather than my cameras. The fee on most of the mainland airlines is $25 per bag, not $10. Sort of makes the 'cheap' flight prices seem like a con, at least to a foreigner. Having said that, and if Simon Jessurun is still on the list he can corroborate, in heavy turbulence overloaded (weight wise) overhead compartments come open and stuff flies around. It's happened to a plane that I was on and it was pretty scary. A couple of people who got hit got taken off to the hospital at the next convenient point. Use your head, sure, but make sure you keep all the eventualities in mind.
