Upon return to the US you could present the document as proof that you did not buy the gear abroad. You might inquire if there is such a registration system in Japan and if it works for gear returned by post as well as on your person. I agree with Sonny about registered mail. It's not the same for every country but Japan's post has an excellent reputation about not loosing things. Some consider it a hassle because, in the US at least, every edge of the box or fold of the paper must be sealed with glued paper tape. No pressure sensitive tape. They then stamp the edges of all that tape so any tampering will be evident. Those white puffy snowflake things are not good packing because they can allow the item to shift inside the box. If it shifts to an inside wall you only have the cardboard between it and the world. Better to put your camera in a good plastic bag, freezer ziplock will do, and then wrap it with bubble wrap until you have 2-3 inches all around. Then you can put it in the middle of the box with those puffy snowflakes. Getting it well packed on the return trip is another thing though.
