Subject: [Leica] Scanner comparison

Yesterday, I received the MF film holders for my Epson flatbed from
betterscanning.com. They are better than the standard ones because they
include T-locks to keep the film flatter.

A couple of weeks ago Michiel had kindly offered to scan one of my 6x9
negatives with his Minolta MF film scanner. So now I have 3 versions of the
same negative, one scanned with the Epson and its standard holders, one with
the new and improved holders, and one with the Minolta MF film scanner. The
comparison is here:

If you click on the little rectangles, you will see a reasonably big image
(2000 pixels on the long side), so you should be able to judge the image
quality. All three scans have received the identical amount of unsharp
masking in Photoshop.

My own conclusion is that the film scanner delivers slightly more sharpness
but the Epson more than holds its own when it comes to dynamic range.

FWIW, YMMV and all that.

Cheers,
Nathan
