Jim,
When I started my stockbroking business in 1990, the average brokerage we
earned was between 1% to 1.5% of the trade. By the time I sold the business
a few months ago, the average brokerage was around 0.10%. We actually were
far more profitable in 2011 than we were in the 1990s, though the brokerage
had come down to a tenth of what it was. That is the environment we function
in, whether we like it or not, and we have to compete if we are to stay in
business. We have to bring our costs in line with what the market will bear
in terms of sales. No point crying about days gone by, we have to focus only
what is likely to happen in the future, and structure the business
accordingly. Otherwise we are bound to fail....
Cheers
Jayanand
