This was the first Canon lens I bought - within a week or two I dumped it - 
just awful.

I'd reserve "great" for my Leica 100 and 180 Apo and 50 lux asph lenses.

My first generation 70-200 2.8 IS certainly wouldn't qualify as "great"
though my particular copy of it performs fairly well on the 5D.
I wonder if this one of those "you might get a good one" situations.
