A couple of factors: what we think of as infinity might not be optical
infinity, so that a distant surfer might be short of optical infinity, and
many long lenses focus beyond infinity in order to allow for thermal
expansion and contraction. W/o TTL viewing focussing a lens this long using
the M8/M9 back screen is tedious trial-and-error under the best of
circumstances and might only be useful if the thing you want in focus is
bolted to the earth.
