In the past (mid 2000's), the only real restriction was that you 
couldn't upgrade it.  When a new version came out, you had to buy it all 
over again.  However, at the time, the academic price was essentially 
the same as the upgrade price, so it wasn't a big deal.

I'm sure there's something in the license agreement that states you 
can't use the academic version for professional work, or some such 
thing.
