Some glass is very expensive to manufacture. The raw materials are not
always expensive, though the Flourite and ED type glasses are very
expensive, with high refractive index glasses they have to be annealed for
several months in order for the refractive index to be constant through the
sample.
This is an expensive process, and one of the reasons this sort of glass is
not much used.
