Richard,

You mean you have to pay that much for ER in the US??

For many Americans, most cost is borne by insurance, either purchased at
great cost or supplied by an employer.

What happens to those who cannot pay? Hospitals write off the costs in many
of those cases, and recover the loss by charging those who pay more.
Ironically, someone who pays cash pays the highest possible rates, while
insurance companies negotiate special rates for their policy holders.

The debate over healthcare is at a fever pitch in the usa, as our supreme
court is reviewing the constitutionality of the recently passed health care
act. I find it a little disturbing that most who are opposed to this are
people who have quite a bit of money or people who are already covered by
generous insurance plans. For those of you who think that the USA is the
land of milk and honey, only the select have milk and honey.
