Diffraction limitation comes in a different apertures for different systems.
A small pixel size sensor (D800(E)) means diffraction limitation comes in at
a wider aperture than say an M9. Once you go up in film/sensor size from 645
then diffraction limitation is effectively not a factor so any aperture is
usable.

When using a view camera people shoot everything at about the smallest f
stop on the tripod just as a matter of course. They will go down to f64 or
smaller and a lot of shooting is done at f32 and smaller.
