My wife and I are considering traveling cross country with our dog,
Man Ray. We are pretty much at a loss to decide how best to do this.
The three modes of travel seem to be station wagon/suv + dog friendly
motels, auto + mobile trailer or mobile home. Everything is loaded
with advantages and disadvantages, cost is a main consideration.

Personally, I'd use the car (truck in my case) + trailer because I like to
stay in out-of-the-way places with no motels for miles around. Boondocking
is free.
