The focus assist works with any lens which can be mounted, which is most 
35mm/FF stuff. You really only get to see the focus assist when zoomed in 
either x5 or x10 and that only works on the central part. It works well with 
M, R or Nikon lenses (all I have tried) with static subjects, it may work 
better with an EVF (I am waiting to see if the Olympus VF-4 works with it) 
for moving things but it is never going to beat an R body....
