They possibly do, but that would likely only appeal to the Leica market 
whereas Audi designed maybe opens up a new market....

If you are going for that market you would go for McLaren, Porsche or Audi 
in cars, (probably).

But that wasn't my point; what I don't understand is why Leica doesn't have 
the sort of expertise in-house to achieve what they need. Given that in 
their very specialised area design-engineering is what they are renowned for 
it surprises me that they look elsewhere.
