Most current macro lenses do a fine job at macro work. There does seem to be
a difference in their performance at longer distances. Some are able to
maintain their performance; others deteriorate. Floating elements can be
used
to compensate for the distance issue and keep the performance at longer
 distances.

The material that I got with my 55mm f/2.8 Micro Nikkor several years ago said
that non micro (or nonmacro) lenses are designed to optimized characteristics,
that is, minimize abberations, when focused at infinity, but that the Micro
Nikkor is designed to minimize abberations when focused at 1.0 meter from the
film plane. That tells me that it does a better job when used as a micro lens
than a normal lense mounted on a bellows or extension tube and used to take
macro photos.
