Thanks for digging up this site, Mark! The following quote seems to
support my common-sense hunch:

"For Kodak HIE load and unload your camera in absolute darkness. Also
remove your wristwatch! Buy a black changing bag if you
want to load/unload at any place outside your darkroom. A good quality
changing bag consisting of two layers/zippers is opaque to infrared. Use
the bag on a
flat underground and again remove your wristwatch. You can safely
develop your films by daylight in a modern Patterson or Jobo tank or in
same tanks in your
darkroom with the roomlight switched on."
