My eyes are not only very old, but also require a marked plus 4 to 4.5
correction for far vision--oh, and for astigmatism. My only "conflict" is
that the split image circles act like center field blindness with the 400mm
f6.8 and, if I remember correctly, weren't so great with the 180 f3.4. I
thought the central prism circle would be a reasonable compromise. What the
heck. I already own two R8 focusing screens. Why not buy a third?

Julian:

I haven't tried it but I find focusing a lot easier with the split image
circle on the R8 than with the microprism that I used to have on my
Spotmatics... which I had switched to split image circles several years
ago. It may depend on how old your eyes are.

P.S. I do find that I like working with the 90mm summicron on the SL
more than on the R8.
