Sadly (luckily) the race organizers are not going to allow joepublic 
up to the fence. I did try to "pan" the lens a bit to blur the wire 
out, but I knew it would alway look like "caged F1". I will remember 
this advise for other wired in events however -- I've often wondered. 
The other problem at  the GP was that you would have been almost too 
close to the action (which was zipping past at 300 kph)

I'll bear that figure in mind ;-)

He should end up with a fine education.

My other problem was how to focus on the track beyond the wire (given 
that I could not go close to the wire) because the wire "interfered" 
with the focus aids on the screen. ie the wire broke up the patterns 
which would normally have allowed me to focus on the white line in 
the middle of the track. I ended up focusing too far back -- not that 
it hurt the shots :-(
