Subject: RE: [Leica] Second Thoughts on a Leica Second Body

Sorry, Brrrrr, but I don't need any lectures, thank you very much.

I owned a Leica CL for about seven years, even owned the matched 40 and
90. I put a lot of film through my CL and in my opinion it is a pooch.
It is too small for my hands and my fingers were always in the
rangefinder windows. The meter cell was attached to the stalk with too
brittle an adhesive and tended to break off and jam the shutter. The
shutter speed dial was in an unfortunate location and on more than one
occasion I dinged it badly enough for a trip to Jersey. The rangefinder
base length is too short for my taste. I found the vertical hang from
the side lugs a real pain and never got used to it. I did not find it
particularly well built and mine tended to gather dust in various nooks
and crannies. I could go on, but what's the point.

Obviously, Brrrrr, you are a REAL LEICA PHOTOGRAPHER, so enjoy your CL.
As you'll note in my original message, I said that many people love CLs,
obviously you are one of them.

know, I know, except for the 40mm Summicron, a truly admirable lens.

Buzz,

The CLE has an electronic shutter and a more conventional format. The CL
is
pure Leica. It belongs to the M5 generation of Leicas. Mechanical to the
core
with a sensitive inboard advisory meter, the CL must be used with the
lenses
designed for it to fully exploit its advantages. Unless you've worked
consistently with the CL you won't appreciate it. At first it seems that
the strap lugs
are in the wrong place. That the back has an extra guide that gets in
the way
of loading film. The shutter speed dial is vertically mounted. You ask
yourself, what do I need this for? The answer comes later. What you
really are seeing
in the CL is precision carried to an extreme.
And a Leica photographer is expected to live with that precision. It
separates him from everyone else out there.
But the images the CL makes are those of a money camera.

So the CL isn't rebarbative. It expects a lot from you. Once you get the

message, you won't part with a CL and its two splendid lenses that are
integral to
its system.
