As I understand it, and I am not an expert but an avid hobbiest who has read a lot about this stuff, the current digital sensors all require the light to come at the sensor as straight as possible - in other words, close to perpendicular to the sensor plane. Check out the lens designs of the new E-1, for example; they strive to make the light strike the sensor straight-on. Visualizer the actual sensor sitting at the bottom of a small pit - if the light comes in a too much of an angle then not enough hits the sensor itself because the pit blocks it... M cameras have the rear lens element very close to the film plane, and the wide angle lenses have to send the light to the film plane at very oblique angles to get full-frame coverage. Film does not care what angle the light some in at, digital sensors do. At least, that is the current state of the technology. As I said before, I hope that Leica can 'fix' this sensor limitation so we can get bigger sensors in our mini point and shoot digital cameras too.
