And since you plan to drive, don't miss the scenery on the way.   One of 
the unique settlement patterns in the United States is the Mormon 
settlements.  Towns or villages are basically layed out with blocks  in 
a square pattern.  In rural settlements, there were typically four 
houses to a block, each with a garden and fruit orchard.  Fields were 
outside of the settlement.  A very self-sufficient settlement pattern.  
You can see remenants of this pattern (though much higher density now) 
in places such as San Bernardino, California and Reno, Nevada.  Nothing 
like the isolated farm holdings you find in the midwest.  A google 
search will give you an idea of what I am talking about.
