My educated guess is that stitching multiple images together is not hard - it could be done on camera or in the computer, but I have no idea about the other aspects, like exposure timing, physical alignment of the chips, etc. Anyway, it seems like a good alternative to large, expensive full-frame sensors, at least in theory.
