Max,
The M3's viewfinder was designed for a 50mm/90/135 lens set.  The
outside of the viewfinder can be used for rough approximation of 35mm
but with no parallax correction.

Unfortunately for Leica, right about that time, the 35mm lens became the
new normal.  So, Leica came up with the spectacles which reduced the
coverage of the 50mm frame lines to 35mm at some cost to brightness and
clarity.  These lenses also keyed up the 50mm frame lines on the M2 and
forward models.

Currently, these 8 element Summicrons are the cheapest way to purchase
the look that the first generation 35 Summicron had; you just have to
live with the spectacles.

Just curious, regarding this lens -- why would a 35 need eyes on the M3?

this is a chrome, Type 1 for M3 35mm Summicron...range is from $ 600-700
