Ah ha!   I've often suspected that part.  I gather you mean the black 
plastic thing shaped like a ridge with rollers at either end.  I think 
it pushes the film onto the sprockets to assist with automatic film 
threading.  Is the new part obviously different, in appearance?  I had 
one of my R8s serviced in Solms recently - I'll have to check to see if 
they replaced it.

Thanks for mentioning.  Please advise how your upgrade works.  On the 
vehicle lists they'd call this a 'hack'.
