I am the least knowledgeable in Digital processing as I can be.  But reading
through this process flow makes me wonder if it would not be more easily
done if you were to use low contrast  film and correct lighting and
exposure.

It is the prime reason I do not do digital.  It is more complicated than
film plus a good color lab plus it requires a whole new set of learning.

Now if I can just find some color lab that still is in business in a few
years, I will be all set.......

Fun is in the mind of the beholder.  The rest of us use film.
