Richard,

That probably wasn't the original scan, was it? It was a JPG file, not
a tiff. I hope you are scanning to tiff.

Anyway, assuming it was just a jpg of a tiff file ...

I would suggest that you tweak the histogram in your scanner software.
Find the two extremes (white and black) and move little sliders so
that nudge the two extremes of the scale. I think that will help you
out quite a lot, leaving you less to do in Photoshop. An original scan
need not be that flat.

Anyway, I'm glad you chose that shot to illustrate your point. I like it.
