The entrance to the bay went undiscovered for a long time. Except for
the Wiott Indian and a couple other tribes, Humboldt Bay wasn't
settled until the 1850's because mariners stayed so far away from the
rugged coast here. Early crossings across the bar wrecked a lot of
ships. Even with the newer jetties, it's still a sailor's nail-biter
at times. And every year we lose one or two tourists from rogue waves
sweeping them into the surf. We locals don't turn our backs on the
