Actually, while rushing through the crowd on his way to urgently find a
bathroom he reached his camera holding hand up to see the time on his
watch. A sudden bang startled him causing his finger to activate the
shutter. Thus begat the phrase advising "f8 when needing to urinate"
though it never caught on for obvious reasons. HCB heard it and
suggested "and be there" sounded good. Thus was born the mantra of
photojournalism.
